The Matterhorn and Zermatt
The Matterhorn, one of the most iconic mountains in the world, stands at 4,478 meters and is located in the Swiss Alps, on the border with Italy. Known for its near-perfect pyramid shape, the Matterhorn is the symbol of Switzerland, and visiting this region is a must for nature lovers, hikers, and adventure seekers. Located above the car-free village of Zermatt, this mountain offers stunning views and a unique experience in any season, but especially during autumn.
Climate in October
- Temperature: In October, temperatures in Zermatt range from 10°C to 15°C during the day and can drop to 0-5°C at night. Higher up (e.g., Gornergrat or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise), temperatures are significantly colder, often below zero. Dressing in layers is key.
- Weather: The weather in October can vary. Days can be bright and clear, perfect for viewing the mountain, but mist or light snowfalls are also possible at higher altitudes. The crisp autumn air and clear skies offer excellent visibility across the Alps.
Why Visit in October?
- Autumn Colors: The autumn foliage is in full display, with larches and other trees changing into golden, red, and orange hues. This creates a striking contrast with the snow-capped peaks.
- Quiet Atmosphere: October is an off-peak season, so Zermatt is less crowded compared to summer and winter. This makes it ideal for enjoying the natural beauty in a tranquil setting.
- Hiking Opportunities: Many hiking trails are still open, and the cool weather is perfect for exploring without the intensity of summer heat.
Should You Stay Overnight?
It is highly recommended to stay overnight in Zermatt, especially if you want to make the most of your visit to the Matterhorn:
- Full Experience: Staying in Zermatt allows you to wake up early and take your time to explore, avoiding the rush. Early morning light offers spectacular views of the mountain, and the absence of crowds makes the experience even more special.
- Sunsets and Sunrise: By staying overnight, you can witness the Matterhorn at sunset and sunrise, when the mountain glows with golden light. Experiencing the Matterhorn illuminated by moonlight is also something unique.
- Weather Flexibility: Since the weather can vary quickly, having a couple of days gives you a better chance of finding perfect conditions to see the Matterhorn in all its glory.
Where to Stay
- Hotels and Chalets: Zermatt offers a variety of accommodations, from luxury hotels to traditional chalets and family-friendly apartments.
- Location: For an authentic experience, it’s best to stay in the center of Zermatt, where you can easily explore the village on foot. Many hotels also offer panoramic views of the Matterhorn from rooms or terraces.
Local Delicacies to Try

- Cheese Fondue: A classic Swiss dish, perfect for sharing.
- Rösti: A dish made from grated potatoes, often served with cheese and meat.
- Viande séchée: Cured meat from Valais, typically served as an appetizer. Zermatt also has many high-quality restaurants, including those offering gourmet dishes made with local ingredients.
Accessibility
- For Disabled Visitors: Zermatt is car-free and offers many accessible paths. The cogwheel trains and cable cars to Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise are also wheelchair accessible.
- For Families: Zermatt is perfect for families, with several kid-friendly activities such as thematic hiking trails and alpine lakes. Paths are well marked, and there are plenty of picnic areas.
How to Reach the Matterhorn

- By Car: You can drive as far as Täsch, which is about 5 km from Zermatt. There are long-term parking facilities in Täsch, and from there, you can take the shuttle train to Zermatt.
- Cable Cars and Mountain Trains: Once in Zermatt, you can explore the Matterhorn area using cable cars and cogwheel trains, such as the Gornergrat Bahn or the cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, both of which offer spectacular views.
