Mobbing

In the complex and interconnected landscape of work environments, the psychological health of employees plays a central role in determining the overall success and well-being of the organization. However, this health can be threatened by harmful phenomena such as mobbing, an aggressive and hostile behaviour that can have serious consequences on the mental health and work performance of employees. Office mobbing is a form of dangerous and harmful behaviour that can manifest in various forms, such as social isolation, constant criticism, intimidation, or work sabotage. This phenomenon creates a toxic work environment that compromises the psychological and physical well-being of the employees involved. Often, mobbing is fuelled by dysfunctional corporate hierarchies, unresolved conflicts, or the lack of effective company policies to prevent and address it.

In Switzerland, office mobbing is regulated by the Federal Labor Law, which protects employees from discriminatory conduct and harassment. This law, along with various cantonal regulations and company policies, establishes the rights and responsibilities of both employers and employees. For example, Swiss law prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, and other personal characteristics. Additionally, companies are required to provide a safe and healthy work environment, including prevention and management of mobbing.

However, despite legal provisions, office mobbing remains a widespread issue both in Switzerland and elsewhere. Many victims hesitate to report their employer for fear of retaliation or damaging their careers. Consequently, it is essential for companies to adopt clear policies and procedures to address mobbing promptly and effectively. These may include training on interpersonal relationships, persecution reporting channels, psychological support for victims, and disciplinary measures for perpetrators. Only through a joint commitment from employers, employees, and government authorities can the phenomenon of office mobbing be adequately addressed and reduced.

A mobbing-free work environment offers a range of significant benefits for both employees and the organization, contributing to long-term success and sustainability. Here are some of the positive consequences of a healthy, mobbing-free work environment:

  • Greater psychological well-being: Lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression allow employees to better focus on their job responsibilities and perform more effectively and satisfactorily.
  • High morale and motivation: Employees feel appreciated and respected by colleagues and supervisors, leading to higher morale and greater team cohesion. This can result in increased productivity and overall improvement in organizational performance.
  • Reduction in absenteeism and turnover: Reduced probability of employees being absent due to illness or leaving the organization due to stress or discomfort in the workplace. This leads to greater staff stability and lower costs associated with recruiting and training new employees.
  • Positive work climate: A mobbing-free environment fosters positive work relationships characterized by healthy, open, and respectful interpersonal interactions. This promotes effective communication, creativity, and innovation, as employees feel free to express their ideas and opinions without fear of retaliation or negative judgment.

A mobbing-free work environment is a place where human dignity is respected, minds are free to express themselves, and there is a sense of collaboration and mutual support. In this oasis of trust and respect, employees thrive, organizations flourish, and the future of work is painted with the colours of solidarity and personal fulfilment. We can look at a mobbing-free work environment not only as a goal to achieve but as an imperative necessity to create a better, fairer, and more humane world of work for future generations. A workplace where the well-being and dignity of every individual are considered sacred and inviolable.
